MIXES

Here we have a mighty mix from the mighty Mighty Mouse. First breaking in 2009 with a remix causing a stir when it featured on Aeroplane’s Essential mix the MM guys haven’t looked back. A string of remixes including Robbie Millions and Gorillaz plus their Disco Circus compilations have set them firmly in the hearts and minds of the international nu-disco scene.

Today’s mix comes from MM’s Matthew – with only a small sniff of cheese.

Old Fool Vibez

“Foolish” may be something of a misleading moniker for our man Felix, as he’s managed to forge a prolific career for himself as a producer and DJ extraordinaire, that’s seen him trot around the globe at one or two sweet as parties here or there .  A charmed life.  Not the existence of a fool by any means.  It’d be more appropriate to call him “Spawny” Felix Dickinson.  I’d be “Massively Well Jel” Duncan Diablo and Neil, well he’d be “Lazy” Neil Diablo.

Anyway, Felix is by no means foolish enough to rest on his laurels smoking doobies all day, he’s a very busy man, doobies or not (seriously, never met him, i don’t know if he does).  The owner of Cynic Records, part of Mythical Beasts (International Feel) with Diablo favourite Toby Tobias, compiler of Originals Vol.5 on Claremont 56 and resident down at Bad Passion.  And that’s just tickling the tip of the iceberg, delve back into any period during the last 20 years and you’ll realise exactly how prolific a producer and eager a collaborator he is, making beautiful music and parties with the best of the best.

Felix has been decent enough to allow us to host his recent “Foolishness” mix and it’s a mother fucking killer.

One of our best ever guests has been Dennis “Citizen” Kane, that’s agreed by us all.  He’s the real deal when it comes to crate diggin’ discoid business, as well as the man who was on point from day dot with what many now refer to as “Nu-Disco” (but anyone with any shred of dignity knows as House music, whilst appreciating the subtleties of difference and type).

Dennis definitely keeps it real, that’s beyond doubt.  He often keeps it real with one Darshan Jesrani, having played and promoted together for many a year, running parties like Adult Section @ Cielo and the infamously shit hot Strobe Lodge parties, taking place in lofts around NYC where the pair take full control of every aspect of the night and channel their passion from the core outwards

Check details for that here : www.strobelodge.com

And keep your eyes peeled and ears unsealed for some serious upcoming podcasts about to detonate here : www.dsgtnyc.com where you’ll also catch the vibe about some extra special releases as Disques Sinthomme and Ghost Town

Get on the incredible Transmission Mix that Dennis has very kindly put together for us…voila

The Bad Passion Project, as you should know, is a posse of Dee Jays and promotors who specialise in bringing the disco pain to the London underground.  With a similar taste in bookings to our good selves and a rep to protect for providing a fierce party in a sexy shithole (their venue not anus), the lads have been nice and safe in their attitude enough to furnish us with this bellisimo blend.  Andy, Chris, Daniel, we salute you. (in a way).

If you’re on the prowl in London Town this Saturday night (19th Feb), you’d be foolish in the mind not to check out their do with Phil South and Anton Esteban from Golf Channel, deets below ;

Greg always has the latest I-Pod.

Last Saturday heralded the end of our Deaf Institute residency and we chose to bow out with a guest who first played for us in 2004 at the beginning of his comeback trail, and whom went on to return and play a variety of odd and nefarious venues…Greg Wilson.   After a gap spanning a good few years it was time to mark a special occassion with a particularly cherished guest, one whom has played a significant role in our history as a club night and as an influencer of our musical tastes.

In fact, Greg himself posted me copies of his Monastic mix, his “Best-of” selections and the CD emanating from his utterly triumphant come back gig Music Is Better  (which I attended and was organised by our ex-resident Danny Webb) sometime in 2003, such is his desire to share and educate about the music he so loves.

And the music he so loves is so much more than a retrospective of his career, as his tireless productions display and his live sets testify.

And so, we present to you the first 80mins of Greg’s super radical appearance at The Deaf for you…

Able(ton) Seaman Johnston

The Hardway Bros comprise of Mr Sean Johnston (London), Jake Davies (LA) and a clandestine South London presence, going by the name “Rico” whom we will leave you to speculate and cogitate upon.  You’ll have noticed a glut of remixes bearing the Hardway moniker over the past year and thus be familiar with their astral discotheque sound and henceforth the decidedly quality nature of it.

It’s Sean who provides us with this exciting, new blend, although Rico may have provided a degree of spiritual vibez during, who knows.  Having a DJ style described as “Future Disco” but indeed enveloping a multitude of genres that require no segregating, he’s played clubs as discerningly great as Disco Bloodbath and had a most triumphant mix, feature on the Beats In Space show.

Alongside a young, rookie Disc Jockey cohort named Andrew Weatherall, Sean has founded an utterly splendid night they’re calling ,

 “A Love From Outerspace”

and describing it as

an oasis of slowness in a world of ever increasing velocity

It’s an exploratory incision into the body of 80-120 BPM music, holding a hypnotic groove and delving into pyschedelia, the good way.  This mix pays tribute to this fantastic monthly session.  And as such, it’s absolutely fucking excellent.

Frank : Looking Downwards

Frank, as you may already know, is one half of production and DJ two-some Wild Geese, purveyors of fine musica from across the House, Techno, (Nu)Disco etc spectrum.  And it’s under this guise that he’s currently forging another path into the world of dance music .  But, as you should by rights already be aware, Frank is a selector par excellence with a knowledge of trans-genre music deeper than Paul Gascoigne’s tin of Breaker.
One of the originators of the legendary Rooty party in that London (alongside Basement Jaxx and Tayo and a long time media scribe (hack), it’s a pleasure and I dare say an honour to receive a mix for our site from a chap who’s done more than most to push tings on, as they say.
Dropping a shoulder to the expected and feinting into an eclectic space, the theme of Frank’s mix is;
“a load of records I really love slung together at 1am after a few pints. As it should be really.”
Take a look at the tracks below, have a wee tipple and enjoy the sounds.
Fireside Chat With The Balearic Soulboys

Eamon Harkin (foreground)

Eamon Harkin (not Holmes) runs not one but two of the current parties du jour in NYC, the triumphant Mister Saturday Night and the hot, hot, hot, outdoor, Summer soiree, Sunday Best.  Regular gigs on both sides of the Atlantic and increasing remix duties are bringing Eamon to the fore in many people’s thinking and his selection skills turbo-boosting his rep as a DJ.

He’s had a rummage and dug out this live mix from Mister Saturday Night, June this year, following on from Ivan Smagghe, more techno flavoured than you may be used to from him, a definite belter of a mix.
